Dynamic Braking Resistor is used in the DC link of frequency converters (VFDs) to safely dissipate excess energy generated during motor braking. It ensures smooth deceleration and protects the system from overvoltage conditions.
When the motor operates as a generator during braking, the DC link voltage rises. The braking chopper activates the resistor, which absorbs the excess energy and converts it into heat. Once the voltage drops to a safe level, the chopper disconnects the circuit, repeating the cycle as required.
